How much does a gravel driveway cost in Florida?
A gravel driveway runs about $1 to $3 per square foot installed. Published cost guides put the national average near $1,500, with most jobs between $600 and $1,800. Length sets most of the price. Base depth, the stone on top and a road culvert move it from there.
Every figure on this page comes from published cost guides, county permit pages and state rules. Our gravel driveway and culvert installation page shows how the work gets built. A real number for your property takes an on-site look. No two entrances sit the same way to the ditch.
What does a gravel driveway cost per square foot and per foot?
Published cost guides put a gravel drive at $1 to $3 per square foot installed. Homewyse lands in the same place, at $1.01 to $2.02 per square foot for crushed stone. At that rate a 12 foot wide drive runs $12 to $36 per running foot. A 10 foot wide drive runs $10 to $30.
LawnStarter puts the national average at $1,500. Fixr puts the average at $1,750. Labor is the bigger half of either number.
Fixr assigns $1,150 to $1,250 of a $1,750 job to labor. Contractors charge $60 to $100 an hour in the same guide. LawnStarter puts labor at $20 to $60 per hour.
Stone is sold by the ton and by the yard, not by the driveway. Fixr says one ton covers 100 square feet at a depth of about 2 inches. Delivery adds $50 to $100 per load in the same guide. Here is how the common materials compare.
| Material | Cost per square foot | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Crushed limestone, sold as limerock | $2–$5 | Stone only. $30–$40 per ton. Limerock base courses have a Florida state spec. |
| Crusher run | $1–$5 | Stone only. $25–$35 per ton. Fines lock the larger stone together. |
| #57 crushed stone | $4–$9 | Stone only. $65–$75 per ton. Golf-ball size, drains well. |
| Item #4 base gravel | $0.70–$3 | Stone only. $10–$25 per ton. The bottom layer of a full build. |
| Pea gravel | $2.18–$2.99 | Installed. Rounded stone that rolls under tires. |
| Crushed granite | $1.21–$2.47 | Installed. Packs tight as a top layer. |
| River rock | $3–$7 | Stone only. $45–$100 per ton. Better as a border than a surface. |
| Concrete | $6–$20 | Installed, new driveway. |
| Asphalt | $12.46–$15.23 | Installed. The priciest surface on this list. |
The stone you pick swings the material side from $0.40 to $2.00 per square foot. It does not change the digging, the shaping or the compaction underneath. That is why two quotes on the same drive can look far apart on paper.
How much does a 20 by 20, 100 foot or 400 foot gravel driveway cost?
Square footage times $1 to $3 gets you close. A 20 by 20 pad is 400 square feet, so $400 to $1,200. A 12 by 100 foot drive is 1,200 square feet, so $1,200 to $3,600. A 12 by 400 foot drive is 4,800 square feet, so $4,800 to $14,400.
Published totals land in the same band. Fixr prices a small one-car gravel drive at $250 to $900. A two-car drive comes in at $800 to $2,200 in the same guide. Short jobs still carry the mobilization, so the price per foot runs highest on the smallest pad.
A 400 foot drive is a different animal. The stone bill runs four times a 100 foot drive, and so does the shaping. Camp access and back-forty drives often run longer than that.
Woods add a step before any of it. LawnStarter puts land clearing at $1.18 to $2.00 per square foot. The post on what land clearing costs per acre breaks that work down by the acre.
What does a driveway culvert cost?
The pipe sets the price, and the county sets the pipe. Santa Rosa County’s driveway permit page puts that call on the inspector. At the line and grade inspection the inspector sets the pipe elevation, size and type. Some permits call for pipe across the entire lot, up to 150 feet.
That last line is the one that moves a quote. A short pipe and a 150 foot run are not the same day of work.
Published cost guides price driveways by the square foot. None of the ones checked here price a culvert that way. Diameter, depth and run length all change with the ditch.
Florida’s drainage manual sets which pipe materials the state accepts for side drains, the pipe under a driveway. Santa Rosa also requires mitered ends on the pipe.
A crushed, silted or undersized pipe is its own job. The old pipe comes out. The ditch line gets reset to the right fall. The new pipe goes in and gets armored.
Is a gravel driveway cheaper than concrete or asphalt?
Gravel is cheaper by a wide margin. It runs $1 to $3 per square foot installed. Fixr puts a new concrete driveway at $6 to $20 a square foot. Homewyse puts an asphalt driveway at $12.46 to $15.23 per square foot.
LawnStarter says gravel is typically less than half the cost of a paved driveway. The trade is upkeep. Fixr says most gravel drives need new gravel added every two to four years.
Weeds come up through a drive that gets left alone. Dust and debris get into the air off a dry surface, which the same guide lists as a downside. Ruts and washboarding follow water that has nowhere to go.
Regrading is the reset. Fixr prices a regrade at $60 to $400 and says it usually takes one to four hours. A maintained gravel drive lasts up to 100 years by that same guide. Concrete at $6 to $20 a square foot buys a surface that needs less of that attention.
Why do gravel driveways wash out on Florida sand?
Sand moves when water runs over it. The soil survey calls Lakeland sand, under Milton and Pensacola, excessively drained and rapidly permeable. Water goes straight through and carries loose stone with it. A drive built flat on that ground cuts into ruts in a season.
The dirt changes across the area. Troup loamy sand around Pace is somewhat excessively drained. Red Bay sandy loam up around Jay is well drained and holds a shape better. Leon sand in Navarre is poorly drained and stays wet.
Hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30. Summer storms drop water faster than flat ground can move it.
A drive sheds water when it carries a crown. Fixr puts the labor to crown a drive at around $100. Under the crown goes depth.
LawnStarter calls for at least 4 inches of stone, with 8 to 12 inches recommended. Fixr calls for 12 inches, in three layers of about 4 inches each. The area gets dug down about 12 inches first.
Fabric under the base slows stone from working down into sand. Homewyse puts landscape fabric at $0.48 to $0.99 per square foot installed. Limerock earns its place here too. Florida road work builds limerock base courses under a state specification of their own.
Shape does more of the work than stone does. That part is grading and dirt work, and it happens before a single yard of gravel gets spread. A new drive through woods needs the lane opened first, which is clearing the drive corridor.
Do you need a permit for a driveway or culvert in Santa Rosa, Escambia or Okaloosa County?
In most cases yes, where the drive meets a public road. Santa Rosa County requires a county permit and inspections if the driveway will attach to a county-maintained road. Escambia County sends driveway work to a Right-of-Way Utilization Permit from Public Works. Okaloosa County issues its own driveway permit for county right of way.
Santa Rosa runs three inspections on every driveway permit. A line and grade, a pre-pour and a final are required. The county says a line and grade inspection is completed in seven business days.
Escambia does not require a building permit for a new driveway or an extension. The right of way permit still applies. An Okaloosa permit goes void if the driveway is not constructed within 90 days of approval.
State roads are a different desk. Florida law puts vehicular access and connections to the State Highway System under the state transportation department. Rule Chapter 14-96 of the Florida Administrative Code is the state highway connection permit rule.
Then there is the buried utility side. Chapter 556 of the Florida Statutes requires locate notice not less than 2 full business days before any excavation. That clock runs on top of the permit clock, so it pays to start both early.
None of the three county pages prints a driveway permit fee, so ask the county what it charges. Clearing rules sit in a separate stack, and county land clearing permit rules covers those.
